Cougar Cross Country

Corpus Christi CYO Cross Country 2018

Cross Country is wonderful sport to help teach kids the value of hard work, discipline, sacrifice, goal setting, and personal achievement. Athletes of all ability can have success in Cross Country and anyone willing to work hard will see improvement by season’s end.  Our primary goal is help every athlete have fun and achieve their personal best. Cross Country compliments other fall sports well and provides a great fitness base for winter and spring sports.

We will hold a small Cross Country pre-season “camp” on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 14th & 15th, 21st & 22nd from 5:45 pm to 6:45 pm. This is a great time for kids who are on the fence to give practice a try and see if cross country is for them! Our regular practices will be every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 5:30 pm to 6:45 pm beginning August 28th. Athletes are required to attend at least one practice a week once the regular season begins to race on Sundays. We will begin and end all practices at the Jack’s Lane track behind Corpus Christi Church/School off Supplee Road. Practices will consist of running around the Corpus Christi property and track, team races on baseball diamonds / fields, games, and some plyometric drills to build general fitness. Every runner should bring a full water bottle and as the season gets colder sweats to warm up.  Proper running shoes are a must!

Parishioners of Corpus Christi and students of Corpus Christi School who are in Kindergarten through 8th grade are eligible to participate. The fee for 2018 is $55. CYO Cross Country is competed by age groups and distances as follows:

Sub-Novices:  Born 1/1/10 – 12/31/13 – Run 2K (equal to 5 x around a standard track)

Novices: Born in 2008 or 2009 – Run 3K

Minors: Born in 2006 or 2007 – Run 3K – harder course, through the woods at Belmont.

Cadets:  Born in 2004 or 2005 or on or after 9/1/03 and not yet graduated from 8th grade.  Cadets run 4K.

We are lucky to participate in the Philadelphia CYO Cross Country Program, which is famed throughout the country for its size and depth of competition. CYO Cross Country meets are held every Sunday at Belmont Plateau one of the top XC courses in the nation. Meets begin September 16th and go through Archdiocesan Champs on October 28th. Each Sunday, every team and runner in the Archdiocese will come together to compete, with roughly 100 teams and 1,500 athletes competing each week. Any athlete who participates in two Sunday meets is eligible to run at Archdiocesan Champs. The top 15 athletes in each age group will receive medals at Archdiocesan Champs. Team awards are given out for Novice, Minor and Cadet Groups at Archdiocesan Champs, as well as Overall team scores.  A team must have 3 athletes per age group to score as in a team and must have a team in each age group for Overall Team Championship.

There are other invitational meets that we may attend as well throughout the season.  Information will be passed on to families when it is received. We will participate in the Area E Cross Country Invitational at right here at Corpus Christi on November 11th. This is a smaller meet where the top 15 runners and top 3 teams will score and medal. We are exploring adding another Sunday meet here at Corpus in early September as well.

Meets begin at 1pm each Sunday. There will be course walks for every course at 12pm before the first meet. The race order and estimated start times are as follows:

Sub-Novice Girls – 1pm                 Minor Girls – 2:15
